Description
INTRODUCTION Women constitute nearly half of the world's total population. They are the co-builders of civilization yet they are underprivileged in many parts of the globe, especially in developing countries such as Bangladesh (1). The life of women in Bangladesh is dominated by a patriarchal social system. Such a system upholds a rigid division of labor that controls a women's mobility, as well as the roles and responsibilities she may take on. Traditionally, a Bangladeshi woman derives her status from her family and her primary role is the maintenance of that family as a social institution and economic entity. Most importantly, through childbearing and child rearing, she ensures the existence of succeeding generations. Disparities exist between men and women in education, health, employment and income opportunities, control over assets, personal security and participation in the political process.
